Compatability Requirements
Nest Hello Doorbell will work in most homes that already have a Hard wired doorbell (2 Wires). But in about 25% of those homes, the doorbell system(1 Wire) can’t deliver enough voltage to Nest Hello. So you must check that your doorbell wiring is compatible. (2 Wires)
If you have a multimeter and know how to use it, you can check your doorbell’s wire voltage or have a SMART Home Pro do it for you.
Compatability Requirements
Step 1 Check Doorbell Chime
Remove your doorbell chime’s cover. Some covers simply pull off, but others may need to be unscrewed.
TIP: Doorbell chimes, which make the sound when someone presses the doorbell button, are usually mounted on the wall near the front door. Many are simply box shaped, but some chimes have decorative covers or metal tubes hanging from them.
If You Have 2 Or More Wires
Your doorbell will probably work with Nest Hello, but you need to check the voltage. Go to next step
If You Have Both Wires & Batteries
Your doorbell will probably work with Nest Hello, but you need to check the voltage. Go to next step
If You Have No Wires & only Batteries
Doorbell chimes that use only batteries won’t work with Nest Hello.
TIP: In some cases, a battery powered chime and doorbell are installed over old doorbell wires. If there are wires under your battery powered chime and doorbell, they may work with Nest Hello. Contact our electrician to check that your wiring is compatible.
Step 2 Check The Wire Voltage
Nest Hello needs to be powered by wires delivering 16- 24 VAC, and at least 10 VA. There are a few ways to check the voltage
Contact An Electrician
A trained electrician will be able to measure your doorbell wire voltage, but if you want to measure the voltage yourself, check the next steps.
